Surgery
Surgery is frequently a major component of combined modality treatment with more advanced disease that cannot be cured by surgery alone.
Today, cancer surgery is being performed more selectively, and increasingly utilizes minimally invasive techniques rather than open surgical procedures. For appropriate patients, minimally invasive surgical techniques allow the surgeon to use flexible scopes and special imaging tools to view and operate within body cavities through small incisions rather than a large open incision. These techniques provide magnification of the surgical site and in some cases, greater precision.
These procedures are also associated with shorter hospital stays, less blood loss, less post-operative pain and faster recovery times than traditional open surgeries. Additionally, minimally-invasive procedures have been shown to result in cancer survival rates that are equal to traditional open procedures.
