Hoag Diabetes Education Center
Millions of people in the United States have diabetes. And, while an estimated 13 million have been diagnosed, the unfortunate truth is that many Americans are unaware that they have the disease. There is no cure for diabetes. So the key to successful management of this disease, and prevention of it entirely, lies in education.
Education of medical and nursing staff in the latest care and treatment options for diabetic patients and those at risk for developing the disease; education of diabetic patients on how to successfully manage their condition; and education of the community to increase awareness of the risk factors for diabetes and how the onset of this disease can be delayed, or even prevented, through key lifestyle changes.
Hoag is providing all three of these vital components in yet another first for Orange County ¬Hoag Diabetes Education Center. This beautiful, new 3,000 square foot facility is home to Hoag's comprehensive approach to diabetes education.
The goal of the center is to help equip diabetic patients and their families with the knowledge and support they need to be successful in managing their condition. To achieve this goal, Hoag Diabetes Education Center offers a host of diabetes self management classes covering topics such as diet education, stress management, medication, exercise and blood sugar monitoring. The center also offers special needs consultation, dietician consultation, classes for pregnant women with diabetes (gestational diabetes) and a support group open to the public.
Visitors to the Diabetes Center do not have to be Hoag patients, however, a physician referral is necessary for the education classes.
