The largest center of its kind in Southern California, Hoag's Breast Care and Imaging Center is dedicated to mammography and stereotactic breast biopsy. A women's touch is present everywhere in the breast care and imaging center, with sensitive technologists who allay patients' fears, explain procedures and help educate women about the role of regular mammography in preventive breast health.

Cardiovascular Services
Hoag Heart and Vascular Institute is the highest volume, highest rated cardiovascular program in Orange County and the premier provider of cardiac surgery, as well as the pioneer in the latest and most advanced medical technology available. In the "California Report on Coronary Artery Bypass Graft Surgery: 1997-1998 Hospital Data" released by OSHPD, Hoag Heart and Vascular Institute was ranked in the top three in the state.
Hoag maintains its preeminence through the combined efforts of an outstanding clinical and support staff, including physician's assistants, RNs, registered cardiac and vascular technicians (both invasive and non-invasive), exercise physiologists and administrative personnel. Hoag Heart and Vascular Institute is home to a highly acclaimed team of cardiovascular surgeons that practice exclusively at Hoag, as well as renowned physicians with expertise in a full spectrum of cardiovascular specialities including cardiology, electrophysiology, echocardiography, vascular surgery and radiology. Together with dedicated nursing and support staff, Hoag Heart and Vascular Institute provides the most comprehensive cardiac care available. The hospital supports its cardiovascular team by providing the most advanced technologies available and offering continuing monthly education programs presented by distinguished medical experts.
Hoag's Cardiovascular Services Department values and recognizes individuals who are self-motivated, flexible and able to respond quickly, confidently and with the utmost professionalism in an emergency. Cardiovascular Services include:
Invasive Cardiology: The cardiac catheterization labs provide diagnostic and interventional angiography and electrophysiology (EP) to adult and geriatric populations. Procedures include: diagnostic cardiac and peripheral vascular angiography; intervention - balloon angioplasty, stent placement, atherectomy, brachytherapy and PFO closure; EP diagnostic and interventional procedures, RF ablation, pacemaker and ICD placements.
- Non-Invasive Cardiovascular Services: ECGs, holter monitoring, stress testing (standard and nuclear), digital echo lab, cardiac ultrasound and vascular ultrasound.
- Cardiac Rehabilitation Services: These services include risk factor management, patient and family education and monitored and unmonitored exercise therapy.
- Pacemaker and Arrhythmia Center: The center provides 24-hour arrhythmia surveillance, pacemaker and ICD monitoring services, including telephonic transmission follow-up and in-clinic follow-up. The center follows more than 1,200 device patients.
- Surgical Services: Cardiac surgery is performed by Hoag's exclusive team of surgeons in the hospital's state-of-the-art cardiac OR suite. Procedures include: Coronary Artery Bypass Grafting, valve surgery, mitral valve repair/reconstruction, Homograft valves, Ross Procedure & Transmyocardial Revascularization (TMR).
- Coumadin Clinic: Provides outpatient management of anticoagulant therapy, managing 500+ patients.
- Congestive Heart Failure Program: Comprehensive program offering inpatient and outpatient services. The outpatient services include patient, family and community education; telemanagement and in-home monitoring with the HomeMed system.
- Cardiovascular Critical Care Unit and Sub-Critical Care Unit: 12-bed Coronary Care Unit, 6-bed Cardiovascular Surgery Unit, 13-bed Sub-ICU and 33-bed Telemetry unit.

Clinical Laboratory
The Clinical Laboratory is a highly regarded, vital component of Hoag Hospital's success. The hospital maintains excellence in laboratory medicine with an outstanding lab team working with the most advanced testing and processing technologies available.
Hoag's Clinical Laboratory is organized to recognize and support individual achievement. Self-directed work teams encourage an active exchange of ideas and innovative approaches between team members, management and other hospital departments. This cooperative spirit offers a unique opportunity for strongly motivated individuals to contribute as team members and to grow as professionals.
The lab is staffed by phlebotomists, clinical laboratory scientists (CLS), histotechnologists, cytotechnologists and laboratory assistants with expertise in one or more of the following areas:

- Pathology/Cytology
- Transfusion Service
Although the work of the lab varies from section to section, Hoag's nearly 150 lab employees all bring a high degree of precision, accuracy, organization, self-motivation and personal responsibility to their job.
Performing more than 60,000 inpatient and outpatient tests each month, Hoag Hospital's Clinical Laboratory is widely recognized for its highly trained, highly responsive technical and support staff.

Health Information Management
The health information management department is a vital part of the Hoag Hospital healthcare team. The department's certified health information specialists and support staff are responsible for managing, documenting, interpreting and tracking patients' medical records. Without their expertise and dedication, the hospital could not function effectively as a top quality healthcare provider.
Working independently and cooperatively with physicians and other hospital departments requires individuals who are self-motivated, detail-oriented, well-organized and responsive. Some of the most advanced record-keeping technology available is used by the health information management department - computerized encoding, document imaging, bar coding and sophisticated transcription software facilitates record processing. Hoag Health Centers
Imaging services are also offered at Hoag Hospital's satellite health centers in Aliso Viejo, Costa Mesa, Huntington Beach and Irvine. Hoag Health Center radiology staff use advanced state-of-the-art equipment to provide such diagnostic imaging modalities such as MRI, CT, ultrasound, mammography and diagnostic/fluorscopic procedures in these friendly neighborhood centers.
The radiology department at Hoag Hospital offers career opportunities and staff development assistance to satisfy a range of individual interests, skills and professional ambition. Although the work varies depending on the modality, all members of Hoag's radiology team play an active, collaborative role and participate in the department's and the hospital's continuous quality improvement program.

Information Systems

Within Hoag's Information Systems department, employment opportunities exist for network, UNIX and LAN administration, programming, web development, project management, help desk and more. Hoag Hospital's commitment to high quality patient care is visible in the computer systems and support services that information systems provides. At Hoag, a unique integration exists between information systems personnel and clinical staff members. This innovative team approach results in the creation of viable technologies that benefit Hoag's patients and the hospital as a whole.
A special team of dedicated clinical professionals including nurses, respiratory therapists, lab personnel and physicians work full-time with Hoag's information systems personnel to help guide the programming, technology and applications that are implemented hospital-wide. These licensed healthcare professionals serve as liaisons between information systems and clinical staff to help evaluate and implement new applications and technologies.
Working together, Hoag's information services personnel and clinicians have launched several timesaving, state-of-the-art applications. Hoag was one of the first hospitals in Orange County to introduce a new, comprehensive computer-based system for the documentation of clinical patient information - allowing patient care teams quick, simultaneous access to patient data anywhere in the hospital. Hoag was also one of the first hospitals to implement a PACS system - allowing Radiologists and medical staff personnel access to stored digital radiology images across the network. In addition, Hoag is installing a document imaging application which will allow for a paper-free environment and is also working on an online physician order entry system.
These are just a few of the many ways that Hoag's Information Systems department helps the hospital to remain at the forefront of patient care in Orange County.

Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI)
This modality represents one of the newest and most useful technological advances in diagnostic radiology. With four MRI machines, Hoag Hospital is one of the fastest growing and busiest MRI centers in Southern California. MRI is staffed by highly educated, dedicated employees, some of whom have worked their way up Hoag's Clinical Ladder to a position in this challenging and rewarding area.

Nuclear Medicine

Pharmacy

Hoag Hospital's Pharmacy offers an exceptional opportunity for highly motivated individuals to practice their profession while staying on the leading edge of therapeutic advancements. Working in a newly remodeled facility, pharmacy staff members utilize the latest technology and automation including the computerized pharmacy profile system, automated TPN compounder, Pyxis stations and C-II SAFE.
Hoag's pharmacy professionals participate in the most recent developments in pharmaceutical science through affiliations with the School of Pharmacy at the University of California at San Francisco, the University of the Pacific, the University of Southern California and Western University. Doctorate of Pharmacy candidates from both schools spendsix-week rotations at Hoag Hospital learning from clinical pharmacists. In addition, the pharmacy hosts two nationally accredited post-graduate Pharmacist Residency positions each year. Staff development is further encouraged through the pharmacy's AES-accredited continuing education programs.
Through its strong clinical pharmacy programs and collaborative relationships with the nursing and medical staff, the pharmacy makes significant contributions to the high level of patient care at Hoag. In addition to dispensing, evaluating and monitoring patient medications, pharmacy staff members are actively engaged in patient education and serve as a drug information resource to the medical and nursing staff.

Radiation Oncology
Located in the beautifully designed Patty & George Hoag Cancer Center, Hoag's Radiation Oncology Department plays an essential role in the hospital's nationally recognized cancer program. Ranked among the nation's top 100 cancer facilities by Coping magazine, Hoag Cancer Center is the leading provider of radiation therapy and cancer care in Orange County. Treating thousands of new cancer patients each year, Hoag's unified approach brings together the most current research, technology and innovative therapies with compassionate and supportive care.
Hoag's ongoing commitment to world-class cancer care is demonstrated by its array of sophisticated radiation oncology technology. Current equipment provides state-of-the-art 3-D image-guided IMRT and conformal therapy using Varian and Elekta treatment machines, ADAC treatment planning system, IMPAC total management system and a Phillip spiral CT scanner. In addition to these modalities, Hoag was the first hospital in Orange County to perform stereotactic radiosurgery, stereotactic radiotherapy and multi-image fusion. Using a team approach, the hospital's dynamic stereotactic radiosurgery program now treats hundreds of patients each year.

Encompassing several sub-departments, the radiology department has one unified commitment - to provide the highest level of patient care and service excellence. Along with our commitment to patients and their families, radiology staff members share a commitment to support and help each other. Our radiologists are well known for their collaborative relationships with hospital staff and engage in many nationally-recognized clinical research efforts.

Rehabilitation
Services Members of Hoag Hospital's Rehabilitation Services Department share a commitment to exceptional patient care, professional growth and team work. Our rehabilitation staff are valued members of the Hoag healthcare team and are highly respected by physicians, nurses and other allied health professionals throughout the hospital.
Physical and Occupational Therapists at Hoag are dedicated to helping, healing and teaching. Hoag Hospital therapists find satisfaction in helping patients improve function and reduce pain. Rehabilitation staff members contribute to the development of treatment plans for hospitalized patients as well as providing outpatient services.
Opportunities exist at Hoag for therapists interested in contributing to many specialized and innovative programs such as: spine, total joint replacement, wound care, hand, pulmonary, neurology and women's health issues including lymphedema and osteoporosis. Hoag's Rehabilitation Services also include neonatal therapy, speech therapy, dysphagia treatment and biofeedback.
The rehabilitation services department places a high premium on staff who wish to advance their skills while working. Weekly in-service training is provided and numerous internship opportunities exist through Hoag's affiliation with numerous physical therapy and physical therapists assistant schools. Within this learning environment, staff members are encouraged to participate in the Clinical Ladder program. Therapists can advance their career at Hoag by receiving special training in hand, wound, spine, orthopedics and neurology. Participation in the hospital's continuous quality improvement team is also encouraged to help develop hospital-wide innovations and clinical pathways. Respiratory Physiology Lab
Utilizing the latest testing and diagnostic equipment, Hoag's highly skilled pulmonary technologists and RCPs analyze blood gases and related studies. Pulmonary function and bronchoprovocation tests, exercise tests, indirect calorimetry and high altitude simulation tests are also performed by trained technologists in the lab and at the bedside.

Respiratory Therapy
Respiratory Care Practitioners (RCPs) are actively involved in every patient care area including the management of ventilators in Hoag's adult critical care beds, cardiac surgery unit and Level II neonatal ICU. RCPs assist in all fiber optic bronchoscopy procedures and participate in all emergency resuscitation efforts. RCPs utilize many protocols and pathways including ventilator weaning, COPD, Pneumonia and Asthma. Pulmonary staff also actively participate in Hoag's Outpatient Pulmonary Rehabilitation Program.

Sleep Disorders Center
Hoag Sleep Disorders Center is a separate outpatient center where polysomnographic technologists perform diagnostic tests including all-night polysomnograms, multiple sleep latency tests and maintenance of wakefulness tests. The center also provides therapeutic alternatives, home oximetry and patient compliance evaluations.

Ultrasound
Utilizing the latest ultrasound imaging equipment requires up-to-date skills. This department enables diagnostic ultrasound professionals to stay at the forefront of technology with continuing education and in-service training. Ultrasound professionals are involved in scanning the abdomen, OB/GYN, neonatal, perinatal fertility assessment, vascular and various other organs and systems.
