Perioperative Nursing
Hoag's OR nursing staff enjoy a state-of-the art environment equipped with the most sophisticated technology. Working side-by-side with surgeons who perform the latest in laser, microscopic, joint replacement and heart bypass surgery, the major surgical areas represented at Hoag Hospital include: orthopedics, neurology, cardiovascular, oral, opthamology, plastics, general and gynecology. Together, our surgical teams perform more than 10,000 procedures each year.
Hoag also works in conjunction with several local colleges in programs that provide diverse clinical training for nurses interested in the perioperative field and is proud to utilize advance practice nurses through its RNFA program. In addition, our nurses work with specially trained preceptors to get a well-rounded education that prepares them to work in all specialty areas.
Hoag also operates three outpatient satellite surgical centers where more than 10,000 surgeries are performed each year. James Irvine Surgical Center, the first hospital-affiliated outpatient surgery facility of its kind in California has three surgical suites. Outpatient surgery is also performed at the Orthopedic Surgical Center of Orange County with two surgical suites and Hoag Newport SurgiCare with three surgical suites and a procedure room. Each center is self-contained with separate admission and registration areas, a pre-operative area, OR suites and recovery rooms.
Patients also receive outpatient treatment at Hoag's Eye Clinic, GI lab and Hoag Cancer Center. In addition, Hoag Hospital operates six satellite facilities - Hoag Health Centers - that bring Hoag's services to surrounding communities in Orange County.
Medical/Surgical
As a nurse in the medical/surgical field, there are a multitude of options including neurology, urology, gynecology, oncology, surgery and pulmonary in addition to an orthopedic unit and Hoag's Chemical Dependency Recovery Center.
Medical/Surgical nurses at Hoag spend more time in direct patient care and less time doing paperwork because of Hoag's efficient Open Electronic Chart system. Nurses also enjoy the convenience of an intra-hospital pneumatic tube system that permits quicker delivery of pharmaceuticals and important information which aids in meeting patients' needs. Hoag also utilizes an automated system for dispensing commonly used pharmaceuticals. Each of these time-saving systems allow our nurses more time to provide quality care to their patients.
Staff nurses have the opportunity to participate in a variety of forums to provide input on important issues as well as gaining clinical expertise at the bedside. With Hoag's progressive approach to evaluating nursing care delivery, medical/surgical nursing offers outstanding opportunities for teamwork, leadership and growth in patient care.
Critical Care
Hoag Heart and Vascular Institute is the number one provider of comprehensive cardiac services in Orange County. Along with the hospital's commitment to providing the best cardiac care, is Hoag's critical care area which includes a CVICU for cardiovascular surgery, post-surgery recovery and a CCU.
In both our ICU and Sub-ICU, the variety of patient care varies widely, enabling nurses to work in-depth across many disciplines. In the ICU, nurses coordinate specialized patient care with an emphasis in neuro-surgery; while in the Sub-ICU, there are diverse opportunities to work with patients needing individualized care in cardiac surgery, general medicine, neurology and oncology.
Hoag's emergency care unit is one of the busiest emergency departments in Orange County, treating more than 50,000 patients a year as one of seven paramedic base stations in the county. And, because of the close proximity to a variety of beaches, water sports and recreation facilities, many injuries relating to these activities are treated in Hoag's ECU.
