Hoag Hospital opens in September with 75 beds, 60 employees, 68 doctors and seven patients

1956

Community-based Auxiliary grows to 750 members

1959

Four-story expansion adds 150 beds

1964

Emergency care unit (ECU) opens to treat 17,000 patients annually

15-bed intensive care unit opens

1966

The 552 Club, Hoag's first fund-raising group, is established

1972

James Irvine Surgical Center, California's first free-standing outpatient surgery center, opens

1974

10-story tower addition brings inpatient capacity to an all-time high of 472 beds

1982

Newport Surgical Center opens in Fashion Island

1986

First MRI unit installed, offering Orange County state-of-the-art diagnostic facilities

1987

Hoag Heart and Vascular Institute is formed, offering comprehensive cardiac services

22-bed chemical dependency unit added

Hoag Health Center - Irvine opens

1991

The Patty & George Hoag Cancer Center opens; Hoag Health Center - Huntington Beach is completed

Orange County’s first employer-owned and operated child care center opens at Hoag

1992

Hoag Newport Lido Surgical Center brings outpatient surgical suites to nine

1994

HCIA and Mercer Management rank Hoag among the top 100 U.S. hospitals and best in Orange County - an honor repeated in 1995

NCG Research (now Solution Point) ranks Hoag the nation’s benchmark hospital in patient satisfaction, treatment outcomes and physicians

1995

Hoag Heart and Vascular Institute Cardiac Services Outpatient Center opens

Hoag Health Center - Costa Mesa opens

ECU renovation is completed, increasing treatment capacity to 50,000 patients annually

1996

Hoag Orthopedic Services becomes the hospital's fourth Center of Excellence

Hoag Health Center - Fountain Valley opens

Hoag launches health care information over the World Wide Web at http://www.hoaghospital.org

1997

Hoag Health Center - Huntington Harbour opens

Hoag/UCI Gamma Knife Center opens, bringing Gamma Knife technology to Orange County

National Research Corporation names Hoag “Orange County Quality Leader” two years in a row

1999

Hoag Heart and Vascular Institute Receives Consumer Choice Award From National Research Corporation

2000

Orange County Register readers voted Hoag “Best of Orange County” for the sixth consecutive year

Hoag is the only hospital in Orange County to receive the highest rating - five stars - for cardiac surgery and cardiac interventional procedures from HealthGrades.com

Hoag is the only area hospital to receive five stars for both Total Hip Replacement and Total Knee Replacement surgeries from HealthGrades.com

2001

Hoag is Southern California’s highest-rated, full-service acute care hospital in the first Patients’ Evaluation of Performance in California (PEP-C)

2002

Hoag completes $50 million capital campaign for the Women’s Pavilion, the largest hospital fund-raising effort in Orange County

Hoag expands its cardiovascular Center of Excellence and renames the program Hoag Heart and Vascular Institute

2003

Hoag Cancer Center’s five-year relative survival rates exceed national averages by 10 percent

2005

Sue and Bill Gross Women's Pavilion opens to continue providing excellent healthcare for the community

Hoag Hospital earns National Magnet Award for Excellence in Nursing
