Frequently Asked Questions

What is Hoag Hospital-Irvine?

Hoag Memorial Hospital Presbyterian has been providing Orange County residents with top quality health care for nearly 60 years from its Newport Beach campus. In February of 2009, Hoag entered into a lease for a vacated hospital facility in Irvine. After a period of investment and major renovations, Hoag will open the new facility as an acute care general hospital in service to the residents of Irvine and south Orange County.

What services will Hoag Hospital Irvine offer?

Hoag Hospital Irvine will be an acute care general hospital offering a full spectrum of inpatient and outpatient services, including a fully staffed emergency room. The Irvine facility will be an extension of Hoag’s campus in Newport Beach and its many community health centers throughout Orange County. The anticipated growth of Irvine and South Orange County over the next decade dictates a need to update the health care delivery services in the community. Hoag is committed to making the necessary investment in this facility to prepare it to meet future needs.

When will Hoag Hospital Irvine open?

After Hoag Hospital signed a long-term lease for the hospital facility in February 2009, extensive interior renovation plans were submitted to the Office of Statewide Planning and Health Development (OSHPOD). Hoag expects to have the state department’s approval by the end of 2009, after which construction can begin in order to prepare the space for state-of-the-art technology and operating rooms. In the meantime, minor infrastructure and cosmetic modifications are underway, including the “Mountains to Sea” design theme, borrowed from the nearby nature trail, which will be incorporated throughout the Hoag Hospital Irvine campus.

No date has been set for an opening, however, best estimates at this time are between August and December of 2010, subject to local and state agency approvals. The hospital facility will remain closed during that time in order to allow for the major renovations required.

Did Hoag buy Irvine Regional Hospital and take over the operations from Tenet?

Hoag did not purchase the facility nor did it assume operation of Tenet’s Irvine Regional Hospital. Tenet’s decision to not renew its lease of Irvine Regional Hospital provided an opportunity for Hoag Hospital to lease the facility on Sand Canyon Road at Alton near the 405 from its owner, HCP, Inc., a Long Beach-based Real Estate Investment Trust. Hoag leased a vacant hospital facility from a landlord, it did not assume an operating hospital.

Before Hoag Hospital Irvine opens, what should Irvine residents seeking Emergency Care do in the interim?

While Hoag Hospital Irvine is closed for renovations, patients have other options for emergency care, including Kaiser Permanente Hospital Irvine, located across the street at Sand Canyon and Alton. Irvine residents need not be members of Kaiser Permanente Health Plan to receive care in its emergency room or hospital, which is the closest emergency room to Hoag Hospital Irvine. Emergency care is also available at Hoag Hospital in Newport Beach, Saddleback Hospital in Laguna Hills and St. Joseph’s Hospital in Orange, as well as others. Patients should check with their insurance provider to see which emergency facility is a participant with their health plan. Click here for a map of Emergent Care in Irvine.
