Stroke Unit

Patients who experience a stroke are often first seen in our emergency department, where the staff is trained to recognize the signs of stroke and perform immediate assessments and intervention. Patients are then admitted to Hoag’s state-of-the-art Stroke Unit, a specialized unit for the care and treatment of stroke patients.

The Stroke Unit is staffed with nurses extensively trained in the diagnosis, treatment and complications of stroke. Our physicians specialize in advanced stroke management and intervention and have developed best-practice guidelines to provide the best possible outcomes.

Each patient admitted to the unit undergoes a comprehensive evaluation and treatment, including tests to highlight the underlying cause of stroke and the common problems that can inhibit recovery, such as sleep apnea. Intensive neurological assessment results in rapid response and treatment when changes occur in the patient.

The Stroke Unit also offers resources to help patients and family members understand stroke treatment, prevention and rehabilitation.
