Vivian Dickerson, M.D.
Executive Medical Director of Hoag Women’s Health Services
Vivian M. Dickerson, MD, is the Medical Director of the Women’s Health Services Center
of Excellence at Hoag Hospital in Newport Beach, California. In addition she is a Clinical
Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the University of California, Irvine (UCI)
Medical Center. In 2004, Dr. Dickerson became the President of the American College
of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, only the third woman to ever achieve this national
honor. She is a frequently invited speaker throughout the United States, Europe, and Latin
America on a variety of women’s health issues and has made many television and news
appearances.
Dr. Dickerson graduated summa cum laude from the University of California, Santa
Barbara, and subsequently spent two years in Togo, West Africa as a health educator
with the United States Peace Corps. Upon her return, she completed her pre-med
requirements and attended the University of California, San Diego medical school,
receiving her MD in 1981. Dr. Dickerson completed her internship and residency in
obstetrics and gynecology at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles. She is certified
by the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology, for which she is currently an
Examiner. Throughout her career, she has received recognition, winning a variety of
awards and honors, including the American Medical Women’s Association Gender Equity
Award (2000), UCI College of Medicine Golden Apple Teaching Award, the District Service
Award from ACOG and the Shining Star in Medicine award from WomanSage. She has
been named by Woodward and White as one of the Best Doctors in America, annually
since 2001. In 2004, Dr. Dickerson was named one of the “Hottest 25 People of Orange
County” in the annual Special Issue of OC Metro Magazine.
Dr. Dickerson is widely published in professional and peer reviewed journals as well as
authoring a number of textbook chapters and pamphlets. Her areas of expertise include
contraception, menopausal management, heart disease in women, and obesity. She
also has an interest in complementary and alternative medicine and served as a senior
research analyst for the Susan Samueli Complementary and Alternative Medicine Center
at UC Irvine from 2000 to 2002. She is currently the Editor in Chief of the The Female
Patient journal and was recently named Subject Matter Expert in Women’s Health for
RevolutionHealth.com.
