Surgical Care

Overall Performance for Surgical Care Improvement Project (SCIP) and/or Surgical Infection Prevention (SIP) – All or None Bundle of Care

It is important that patients receive ALL the recommended elements of care for which they may be eligible.

Patients undergoing a surgical procedure may be eligible for the following care:
  • An antibiotic at the right time (within 1 hour before surgery) to help prevent infection.
  • The right kind of antibiotic to help prevent infection.
  • Preventive antibiotics stopped at the right time (within 24 hours after surgery).
  • Blood sugar (blood glucose) kept under good control in the days right after cardiac surgery.
  • When necessary or required, hair is removed from the surgical area before surgery using a safe method, not a razor.
  • Body temperature is normal following colorectal surgery.
  • Beta Blocker medication prior to surgery or shortly thereafter for Coronary Artery Bypass Graft surgery (CABG) and for other patients who routinely take beta blocker medication.
  • Timely and appropriate treatments to prevent blood clots.
